The structure
of care*
As architects, we tend to construct hard buildings with concrete materials, seemingly unbreakable and independent; however, we have built a structure using soft materials that require care and invite observation. “We Rest at the Birds Nest” creates an array of nesting rooms for humans and birds. Arrayed in rows, small dwellings composed of paper and grass found in the area, offer sanctuary for the region’s birds. Through meticulous prototyping, created dwellings that were designed to be moulded by hands and observed by eyes. This layered form, composed of elementary organic waste and scaffolding suggests its lifespan abides by the ephemeral proposition of the triennial, “The Beauty of Impermanence.” At the end of its use, the structure underwent the natural digestion of the industrial zone. This space offers a template for collective agency by reinforcing the simplest habits of rest; tending, caring, and observing.
