Sustainable carpentry*
Through a workshop that explored traditional woodworking techniques and indigenous material knowledge, Roots & Resilience developed and shared locally informed sustainable woodworking practices. The project started with research on local timber, their source and production facilities, and the impact of felling each species. Then a site visit to Makoko's Oko Baba, a sawmill where most timber from Nigeria is processed and a visit to Ile Ife, a forest where a large portion of timber is sourced from helped shape the research further, giving us a first hand understanding of our timber industry. Finally, a two week workshop was given to 7 chosen carpenters. The workshop shared the research findings and trained them in traditional carpentry using low-cost, high-quality techniques. Together, these carpenters constructed a communal table and individually they created stools that demonstrated the ideologies of the workshop. The furniture pieces were exhibited and sold.
